Welcome!

Fellow Students,

The devastating flooding on the University of Iowa campus has affected many members of the university community including undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. For students who have been personally or financially affected, we are writing to inform you of available resources to assist you during this difficult time.

Please read the following section if flooding has affected:
1. Your off-campus housing
2. Your financial obligations
3. Your campus job

1. HOUSING
If you are planning to move into a new property on August 1, 2008 -particularly property on 1st or 2nd Avenue or 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th Street in Coralville or Riverside Drive in Iowa City -we strongly encourage you to check immediately with your landlord to confirm that it will be available. If your rental will not be available, there are resources available to assist you.  Those resources include the Off-Campus Housing Service(imu.uiowa.edu/housing), University Housing
(housing.uiowa.edu), and for help with landlord and legal disputes regarding leases, assistance can be found at Student Legal Services (http://imu.uiowa.edu/wordpress/?page_id=35).

2. FINANCIAL FLOOD AID
The University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid is responding to the emergency and short-term needs of students negatively impacted by the flood of 2008 with a combination of existing UI short-term loan funds and grants supported through the UI Flood Relief Fund.  The amount of support to individual students for both loans and grants will vary by individual circumstances. Students requesting special consideration for support will need to meet with a UI financial aid counselor. Counselors are available on a walk-in basis at 208 Calvin
Hall between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 319/335-1450 or write financial-aid@uiowa.edu.

*INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: International students and scholars at the University of Iowa in F-1 or J-1 status are often not eligible for the same resources as U.S. citizens and permanent residents. However, International students will be eligible to receive UI Flood Relief Grants and UI short-term loans noted above to assist with their emergency needs. International students need to see an advisor in OISS
regarding their eligibility for these grants and loans. The UI Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) has created a Web site detailing the types of funding available to those in the F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant categories. The list includes information on financial support, housing, food, clothing, furniture, moving and clean-up assistance and short-term loans for students. Other resources are being added regularly. International students and scholars are strongly urged
to check the OISS website(http://international.uiowa.edu/oiss/resources/flood.asp) for updated information. If you have questions, please call 319/335-0335 or email: OISS@uiowa.edu.

3. JOBS/WORK-STUDY
Students who have lost employment due to the flood may be able toaccess Disaster Unemployment Assistance through a Federal assistance program administered by the state.  People applying for disaster unemployment assistance must have proof of past earnings.  The Workforce Development Center can accept disaster unemployment assistance claims or individuals may file at the Workforce Web site at “file an unemployment claim” at http://www.iowaworkforce.org/. The Iowa Workforce Development Center in Iowa City is located at 1700 S 1st
Avenue in Iowa City.  The telephone number is (319) 351-1035.

Students who need to obtain alternative employment for the summer should check the Jobnet Web site at www.uiowa.edu/financial-aid/jobnet. The Web site continues to be updated daily, Monday-Friday, with new opportunities.  In addition to regular job postings, there are a number
of flood-related clean-up jobs available.

Students who are home for the summer and are planning to return to jobs in the fall in areas that have been affected by the floods should contact their supervisors to ensure that employment will still be available.  Students displaced from work in the fall can locate alternative employment through checking job opportunities on Jobnet. The Fall Student Job Fair will provide another job search opportunity. The location of the Fair is still being determined, and students should check the Office of Student Financial Aid Web site closer to the fall semester.  The Fair will be held on Friday, August 29th.

For more information, please visit Flood Relief Resources for UI faculty, staff and students at: http://www.uiowa.edu/floodrecovery/#relief.

The Partnership of Student Governments at Iowa is working on your behalf through the summer to address flood and non-flood student issues.  If you need to talk to a student government representative about flood-related or other issues, please feel free to contact the University of Iowa Student Government, at uisg@uiowa.edu or the Executive Council of Graduate and Professional Students, at ecgps@uiowa.edu

We look forward to seeing you in the fall. GO HAWKS!

Sincerely,

The Partnership of Student Governments at Iowa
