UISG President Pottebaum calls to "Seal the Deal!"
UISG President Nicholas Pottebaum has signed onto the National Campus Leadership Council letter along with hundreds of Student Body leaders across the country urging President Obama and Speaker Boehner to get a deal done to avert the fiscal cliff. More information here.
Here is the letter:
Dear President Obama and Speaker Boehner,
Our generation needs your leadership, now more than ever. We are increasingly concerned about the state of fiscal cliff negotiations. The consequences of no deal threaten our ability to pay for college and undermine our future prosperity. As those who stand to lose the most in this debate, we urge you to get the job done.
While it appears many members of both parties are largely concerned about politics, our classmates are concerned about finishing school and finding good jobs. We already face massive challenges, from $1 trillion in student debt, record levels of youth unemployment, and campus safety. We cannot begin to solve these issues if we are stuck cleaning up the mess left by inaction on the fiscal cliff.
Young people are paying close attention. We spent our fall semester rallying our fellow students to go vote, regardless of their politics. These efforts contributed to near-record turnout and, in some cases, swung elections. Now we stand united to urge a bold, balanced, and bipartisan solution to avert fiscal disaster.
This is an opportunity to shape the country we want to live in, and we urge you and your colleagues to stand up for the next generation, not the next election.
Sincerely,
The undersigned student body presidents
